I recommend the following build steps:
 Unpack the source...
 patch ...
 $ ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var --disable-gtk-doc
 $ cp /usr/autotool/devel/bin/libtool .
 $ make
 $ make install
 
Well, these patches just get the GNOME 2.2.1 sources *compiled* successfully. 
There are tons of BUGs, any suggestion and test are welcome.
